Every year we’ve added handmade decorations to our gallery. From glittering baubles to branches covered in bright ribbons and beads, they’re always lots of fun to make with friends and family:

Flying Baubles and Branches

We’ve suspended our branches and baubles (all handmade) from the ceiling using wires or invisible string. Like the floating candles of Hogwarts’ Great Hall, these levitating ornaments help conjure up some Christmas magic…

Stockings

The fireplace is the centrepiece of the MinaLima Library with piles of Hogwarts acceptance letters flooding down the chimney and onto the floor. At Christmas we add cheerful stockings to the mantlepiece, hand-ribboned, ready to be filled with goodies.

Use ribbon to customise stockings with your initials. Can you guess which characters the letters on our stockings refer to..?

Wrapping

Beautifully wrapped gifts under the tree become part of your decor, so make sure your wrapping skills are up to scratch: whether than means well-chosen gift wrap, glossy ribbons, or a thoughtful note on the gift tag.

Magical Ornaments

It wouldn’t be a MinaLima Christmas without a few magical elements added to the gallery: owls, robins, sequins, and stars. We’ve even adorned pinecones with gold foil to complement the foiling on our Premium Prints.

Stop by House of MinaLima for a little inspiration and try a few of these tips to transform your own home!

Thanks to @i0x0i_0x0 for the miniature!

On the 6th of June 2016,
we opened the doors to our gallery in Soho.

It was an incredible moment. We’d spent months selecting perfect paint shades, plastering the walls with pages from Daily Prophet newspapers and filling antique cabinets with original props we’d designed for Wizarding World film sets.

In fact, the artwork on display represented over 15 years of work together, from the artifacts we’d fashioned for the Wizarding World films, to our playful series of Collective Noun prints.

From the very first moment that we stepped through the doors, we knew the house would be the perfect place to bring our creations to life. We initially planned to keep the gallery open until February 2017 … however, it quickly became clear that the gallery was here to stay!

Three years later, and our “pop-up” can’t really be called a pop-up anymore! Since we embarked on this adventure the four floors of House of MinaLima have seen plenty of magic unfold: three of our Illustrated Classic book launches, two Wizarding World films released, a proposal and more window displays than we can count.

A small selection.

We’ve discussed our work at MinaLima Lates events, mixed pink cocktails for Valentine’s day, and every Christmas has seen the house festooned with decorations, hand crafted by our staff (who inevitably ended up covered in ribbons and glitter!)

We’ve also been lucky enough to bring House of MinaLima to locations around the world, with pop-ups in France and Japan, as well as trips to Orlando for Celebration of Harry Potter and to Dublin for Leaky Con. In April this year, we were thrilled to launch House of MinaLima in Osaka, and were overwhelmed by the warm welcome we received there!

The best part has been sharing our house with so many wonderful witches and wizards, whether you’ve just stumbled across the gallery for the first time, or have followed our work from MinaLima’s inception. We’ve loved hearing about your experiences at the gallery, the quirks that you’ve spotted, and the conversations you’ve had with our staff.

The gallery floors are constantly evolving (we have some experts in transfiguration among us) and we hope that every visit will reveal something different; whether its the tiniest of details that you suddenly notice in a favourite print, a newly released piece of artwork, or a room that’s been totally transformed…

The many faces the first floor has had over the years.

And, of course, with three candles on our cake, we have had a busy week-long birthday party, which continues until Sunday 9 June. Celebrate with special events and exclusive offers, stop by to discover secret stories, and get your hands on some gifts and goodies.

Have you ever wondered how your Wizarding World print is created? Just why are MinaLima’s limited edition prints so special? Come behind the scenes and find out the magical process behind the artwork.

Step 1

Every print is digitally printed on Hahnemuele fine art paper (a 100% cotton rag paper). This is more durable than wood based paper, as well as having a beautiful texture. We use archival pigment inks which resist fading and provide strong, precise colours.

Step 2

Your print is cut to size. All of our prints come in standard framing sizes. We try to reflect the size of the original film prop in each replica print.

Step 3

Premium Prints are hand foiled – just as many of our original film props were! This illumination adds a special dimension to the design and often brings the artwork even closer to the prop.

Step 4

Your print is embossed with the MinaLima seal.

Step 5

We write the print’s unique edition number in the bottom left corner of the artwork by hand. Prints are limited to 250 editions in Premium and 1000 in Standard. Every print comes with a certificate, confirming the edition number, which enables you to prove the authenticity of your artwork.

Step 6

Premium prints are hand-signed by Mira and Eduardo. This is the oldest art authentication method and accentuates the connection between the artists and their work.

Step 7

Our prints are carefully packaged for delivery, sealed with our specially designed ‘Delivered by Owl’ sticker and sent to you.

Searching for some weekend reading?
Staff at House of MinaLima talk about their favourite Illustrated Classics

ZAK RECOMMENDS…
Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

Zak has always loved the Peter Pan story (and admits he has a soft spot for Tinkerbell). “It makes me feel nostalgic!” His favourite chapter of the book includes the bold and playful ‘Croc O’Clock’ dial!

BETHANEY RECOMMENDS…
The Little Mermaid and Other Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen

Bethaney picks out our edition of The Little Mermaid because ‘there are so many different stories contained in the same book’ . Her favourite is The Nightingale: “I like the message of the story. And it has my favourite bit of artwork from the series – I love the colour scheme!”

TOD RECOMMENDS…
The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

Tod’s favourite Illustrated Classic is The Jungle Book. “It’s an adventurous story. But I also love the way it’s been adapted in this edition”. His favourite insert shows a medley of colourful monkeys emerging from the pages.

OETTIE RECOMMENDS…
The Beauty and the Beast by Gabrielle-Suzanne Bardot de Villeneuve

Oettie adores the elegance of The Beauty and the Beast, with its 18th century French setting. “It’s got such a beautiful cover. It was also interesting to discover the original story because it’s quite different from some of the adaptations”. Her favourite illustration features Beauty and the Beast at a long dinner table, laden with dishes – “it’s a key moment in the book!”

KATYA RECOMMENDS…
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Katya is delighted by the interactive elements in this book: “particularly the letters… and the ‘Dress up Mary’ cut out: I used to love dress up dolls when I was younger!”

With Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass launching this October – the sixth in MinaLima’s Illustrated Classics series – we want to reveal how we were first inspired to create this collection of enchanting editions.

In 2015, together with Harper Design we set out to assemble an anthology like no other. We envisioned an entire shelf of beloved children’s tales. J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan was the first to be selected; its mixture of adventure and imagination made it a perfect fit for our inventive designs. The collection has grown to include The Jungle Book, The Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid & Other Fairytales and The Secret Garden, all unified by deluxe foiled covers but each designed to maintain its own personality as an individual story.

As avid book collectors (our studio and home walls are lined with packed bookshelves), we relished the prospect of creating our own editions of treasured tales. However, we were keen that our interpretations should offer the reader something unique, so we thought about how we could bring our experience in prop design to design to the books.

And so our interactive and pop-up elements were born. The interactive elements taking the form of ephemera from each story: letters, maps and dials all draw the reader in, making them participants in each wonderful world.

The result is that every edition in the series is designed to feel as if it comes from the world of the stories: we wanted our version of the Peter Pan book to feel like it was from Wendy’s Room – not just that it was about Peter Pan but that it was from Peter Pan.

Having flown to Neverland and journeyed through the Jungle, we’re excited to follow Alice down the rabbit hole to Wonderland.

Are you excited for the next addition to MinaLima’s library?

…And how to get your own!

The magic started in 2001 with a very special prop: Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Acceptance Letter introduced him to the extraordinary world of Hogwarts – and left the rest of us waiting restlessly by our letter boxes.

Harry’s letter is a turning point in the tale, offering the prospect of escape – a gleam of hope flooding into the Dursleys’ dismal sitting room.

Fast forward almost two decades and the envelope has now become iconic; perhaps because it also encapsulates our first discovery of the Wizarding World.

The letter wasn’t just the start of Harry’s journey: as the first graphic prop ever designed for the series, it symbolises over a decade’s worth of work from original prop creator Miraphora Mina.

How does the design for the letter help tell the story? As the first magical object shown on screen, it must feel significant, a simple yet distinctive design. The unusual green ink give it a quirkiness while the wax seal signifies the authority of an institution. Including ‘The Cupboard Under the Stairs’ in Harry’s address recalls that humour we all know so well from the books. From the moment we see it, contrasted to dreary Muggle letters, we know its contents will be momentous.

Hundreds of copies of the letter were digitally printed on thin paper to allow them to flutter to the ground. However, Mira hand wrote about twenty copies for closeups to ensure it would appear completely authentic. Every detail was considered: smaller, lighter-weight envelopes were specially created for the owls to be able to carry them in their beaks! And, of course, Mira even imagined McGonagall’s signature!

In November we were thrilled to introduce an exclusive bespoke replica at MinaLima: your own letter and envelope, handwritten by Mira either as it appears in the film or personalised with your name and address. Carefully cased in a handbound Japanese silk box, each unique letter is crafted to order and designed to be treasured.

Miraphora Mina creating one of the personalised prop replica Hogwarts letters.

This is an unsurpassable gift for anyone who has followed Harry’s story, and an exceptional addition to any collection.

When did your Wizarding World journey begin? Are you still waiting for your Hogwarts Letter?
